Is a Barney the Dinosaur party in your future? Need some ideas to bring it from ordinary theme party to extraordinary Barney event? Well look no further:
The Cake
There is nothing wrong with a box cake mix, they are always fluffy and moist. The rise consistently, and they are relatively full proof. But if you don’t want the other moms to know that you went the box route, just make a few changes.
Follow the directions on a box of yellow or white cake mix, but add, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, almond, lemon, or orange extract. If adding lemon or orange extract you may want to also add the zest of a lemon or orange.
Just before you put the batter into the cake pan add in purple sprinkles, stir just to mix lightly. Will add purple specks through out the cake.
Add purple cake coloring to the mix, I prefer either paste or powdered coloring (available at cake decorating shops) tint your tots cake a lovely shade of purple, and turn every other mother green with envy.
Add a filling. Instead of more frosting between the layers of your cake, add a filling, pie fillings either custard or fruit from the grocery work, or look for fillings at your favorite cake decorating store.
Take a old idea and make it new. Make your cake a jello cake before frosting it. While the cake is warm, poke holes across the top, allow to cool, prepare grape jello according to package directions, cool slightly, then pour the thickened jello over the cake, it will leave grapey purple streaks through the cake. Frost as desired.
Turn any cake into an ice cream cake, just slightly melt the ice cream slightly, then pour into the same cake pan that your cake baked it. Freeze until solid, unmold and use as the bottom layer of your cake, frost and, you’ll have a cool surprise for your guests.
Turn a batch of cupcakes into an instant cake. Place cupcakes mosaic style on a tray (very close together. Frost across the entire top. Top with an edible Barney cake art, and behold, instant Barney cake!
I scream, You scream, We all scream for Ice Cream
Instead of dipping up ice cream at the party, pull out your trusty muffin/cupcake tin and line it with either paper or silicone baking cups. Now scoop up ice cream and roll each scoop in either purple decorating sugar, purple sprinkles or Dino shaped sprinkles. Place in freezer and at party time, you have a serving of ice cream in it’s own cup, top with a cupcake pic if you really want to wow them.
Make Dino shaped ice cream sandwiches. Roll out a roll of refrigerated sugar cookie dough, cut with dino cookie cutter and bake as directed. Thaw ice cream slightly and spoon into a baking sheet, refreeze. Use the same dino cookie cutter to cut out a dino shaped ice cream, then sandwich it between two cookies. Who could resist?
Dinosaur Eggs yummy egg and egg shaped treats for Barney Birthday, or Barney Easter party.
Dino-eggs. Hard boil eggs, when done and cool, crack the shell and dip into a cup of boiling water mixed with 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 teaspoon purple food coloring. Allow to dry then peal egg. The white will be stained with purple spots, streaks and mottled to a pretty dino egg. Use for deviled eggs.
Dinosaur egg cookies, make your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, swap out the chocolate chips with egg shaped candy coated chocolate (if it’s not Easter time… Use peanut or almond M&M’s)
Petrified Dino Eggs, (other wise known as Easter bread) make your favorite Easter bread recipe, or sweet bread recipe, flatten dough out about an inch thick, press candy eggs into the dough and bake.
Party food for Toddlers
Open faced Barney butter and jelly Dinosaurs. Make open faced peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, cut with Barney or Dino shaped cookie cutter use ½ of a green grape for his tummy.
Make sandwiches, of cheese, lunch meat etc, and cut into Dino shape with cookie cutter.
Dinosaur Goo, make jello squares in green and purple, for gooey finger food.
Let’s not forget the drinks
Plain old Grape juice or grape koolaid is just fine with this crowd, but if you jazz it up with a little club soda, it becomes an instant punch.
Turn your party punch into Barney Floats, just pour over lime sherbet.
